2010 Whidbey Campout

Can't remember the last time you a tent? Worried about not knowing anyone on your event? Trying to figure out the best way to pack your bag...within the weight limit? Looking for moral support, fundraising ideas, blister cures, new stretches, or just new friends? Do I have an offer for you!!

Fort Ebey Training Walk/Campout Weekend
When: Friday, August 6th - Sunday, August 8th, 2010
Where: Fort Ebey State Park, Whidbey Island, WA (about 1.5 hour north of Seattle)
What: Join me for an awesome training weekend in a drop dead gorgeous setting!

FRIDAY: We'll meet Friday night at the campground and take a short 5 mile stroll along the bluff just in time for an amazing sunset. We'll have time to set up camp and visit before bed.

SATURDAY: Saturday morning we'll get up bright and early for a quick breakfast then leave from the campground for our training walk. Our 20 mile day begins on forest trails then winds through peaceful farmland into downtown Coupeville where our trusty Crew will provide lunch for us in a lovely park setting. After lunch we'll be treated to even more breathtaking views of the water as we wind our way back to the campground. During the day there will be plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery and you won't want to forget your camera for this one! The route includes level walking as well as rolling hills. Our wonderful volunteer Crew will be there all day supporting us and manning Sweep vehicles just in case you need a shorter option. After our walk we'll have dinner, visit and head for the tent.

SUNDAY: Sunday will find us up and about early so that we have time to pack our individual bags. After a quick breakfast we'll head out for a shorter walk - about 12 miles that will retrace some of our Saturday route. After we're done walking you'll head home.

Cost: $60 per person. Cost includes camping & parking fees, all food, snacks and beverages including our favorite - sports drink! Payment must be made prior to the weekend and is non-refundable. I know it sounds harsh but it's the only way I can cover the cost of this event! Space is very limited and your spot is not confirmed until I receive your payment. Checks should be mailed to Penny Kellam, 1702 104th Pl SW, Everett, WA 98204.

You will be responsible for bringing your own sleeping gear, walking equipment and any special dietary foods. Basically you will want to pack as if you are going to your actual event. It's a great way to try out that new sleeping mat or to find out how warm your sleeping bag really is! Most "communal" camping equipment will be supplied (tents, stoves, lanterns, etc.) As the weekend draws closer I'll be sending out a request list for any needed equipment.

This will be the tenth year that I've planned this event and we have always had an absolute blast. It's a great way to connect with fellow walkers and share some amazing energy. If you'd like to view a few pictures from past years log onto my pledge page and take a look around!
Please feel free to drop me a note with any questions or concerns. I really hope you will be able to join me!

Training Walk Schedule

No training walks currently scheduled. Keep checking!

Whidbey Weekend

Last weekend many of the team enjoyed a fun filled campout/training weekend at Fort Ebey on Whidbey Island. Friday night we walked 5 miles down from our campsites to the beach for this beautiful sunset. After some chatting we found our tents and settled in for our first night. Lessons learned from Friday? Heat wraps are good. New sleeping bags are good. Hats rock! New friends are awesome!

Saturday morning dawned foggy and cool but with a warm breakfast of yummy french toast from our incredible Crew we were ready to tackle the 21 miles ahead of us. We walked a little bit of everything on Saturday - forest trails, bike paths, sidewalks and country roads.

The views during the day were breathtaking and there were photo ops galore!

Coupeville was dressed in pink for our arrival with pink balloons and pink ribbons up and down our route. Several businesses had posters in their windows sharing their support of the 3 Day walkers and we were very grateful to Miriam's - a local coffee shop that handled all 50+ walkers multiple times during the weekend with a smile and great service!

After our wonderful Crew served us a nice fresh lunch in Coupeville City Park we hit the road again to enjoy even more beautiful scenery....oh, and then there was the ice cream!

Back in camp a few of us took advantage of a cool foot soak in the kiddie pool. After dinner of fractured tacos and banana boats we visited for quite awhile around the fire before we each wandered into our tents for another night under the stars. Lessons learned from Saturday? Hydration is important. Blisters happen. 21 miles is shorter than you think when you are walking with friends.

Sunday morning we relunctantly packed up our gear and said goodbye to Fort Ebey. Today's walk was 11 miles and started at Miriam's. The sky was clear and the temps just a bit warmer than the day before so we were even more incredibly grateful for our awesome crew. They kept us supplied with water, ice and of course Red Vines!

After a fun weekend of new friendships, new discoveries and a new glimpse into what life on the 3 Day may be like, we climbed into our cars and headed home. Tired, sunburnt, blistered, but with smiles that said it all.

Thanks Whidbey Walkers for still another great campout!

June 19th Training Walk

Today's walk is one of my absolute favorites.  The scenery is were the incredible walkers that joined me for 14 miles!

Enjoying a stretch and break at Howarth Park

Adding to my list of "things you just don't see everyday".  This angel is all ready for a dip in the water.  His buddy was on the other side of the deck waiting patiently as well.

Follow the route?  Heck I know how to get to where we need to be faster.  Oops.  MONSTER hill!  I promise, promise, promise to never walk us up this hill again!

Expo Training Walk

We had a great group come out for a pre-Expo training walk.  It's always fun to see new faces and visit with old friends you haven't seen all season!

My favorite photos are always those showing a long line of pink walkers.  This was taken at about mile 1 or so.

As we crossed over Greenwood Ave N to walk by the golf course, we were met by Kindred Spirit Sarah Catton all decked out in pink with her pink flamingo throwing beads for us as we walked by.  Below is Sarah and her hubby on still another corner cheering the walkers on.  Thanks Sarah for all your support!

I've said it before - we have FUN on our training walks.  Love these big smiles!  :-)

Memorial Day Weekend Training

No group picture this time but 36 of us headed out Saturday morning for 11.3 sunny miles with just a bit of a breeze.  The photo above is part of the group heading out on Bothell Everett Highway.

Our first stop was Heron Park in Mill Creek where we took advantage of the picnic tables for some good stretching after the hill that got us there!

Tired of walking with cars buzzing by, I routed us underneath the power lines on this service road.  Something a bit different for a change!

We couldn't figure out how to but 11 fingers up so instead you get 10 fingers and a tongue!

Next week - our first official back to back training walks!  Hope you'll be there!

The Flamingos are here!

As promised here are some photos of the girls we created last Saturday.  These gals are still in the process of being created, but you get the idea!

In the beginning there were sad, plain flamingos but these creative folks were about to put an end to their plight!

This one gets to explore her inner belly dancer.

And aren't all flamingos a princess at heart?

This gal in on her way to being a showgirl!

And here's my flock busy at work this morning on the back porch of a friends house.

If you need instructions on how to create your own flock, drop me a note at
